Classical & Jazz Concerts

Pinner Parish Church

October 2018 - April 2019

Tickets are now available to book online

This autumn sees the beginning of Music in Pinner Series (MPS), a new monthly series of Saturday concerts in Pinner to keep us entertained until spring! It draws together two strands: firstly, something to flow on from Pinner Jazz, whose final concert was in March ’18, after 20 very fine seasons; Stuart Nattrass’ successful jazz concerts have delighted audiences from near and far, and I wanted to find a way to continue to bring jazz to Pinner.  Secondly, there is an overflow from Pinner Music Festival (PMF); one joy of directing PMF has been to discover so many fine performers who could delight our audiences here – more than we can accommodate in one week annually.

MPS tries to weave these strands together – to keep your musical selves warm through the darker months. All but one of the concerts will be held in Pinner Parish Church;  the one in January will be at Pinner United Synagogue, where two very successful jazz concerts have taken place, and where warmth is guaranteed!

For our trial season ’18-’19, I have devised a varied concert programme (five classical & two jazz), each one of high quality and great entertainment value. Some artists have local connections too. I do hope that you will sample these, even ones that fall outside your usual bag!

MPS opens in style on 6th October with the acclaimed Fidelio Trio performing three of the finest examples of this form – intimate, yet almost symphonic in scale – by Faure, Ravel and Schubert. These works have lovely melodies and rhythms with skilled use of harmony and key-changes; our instrumentalists engage in sparkling musical conversations!

On Remembrance Saturday, 10th November, a special concert marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War, and of Sir Hubert Parry’s death, given by the superb young choir – The Carice Singers. They feature works by Holst, Elgar, Gurney, Howells, Browne and Cecilia McDowall, and Parry’s exquisite Songs of Farewell.

On 8th December, we have a delightful exploration of classical pieces for alto saxophone, written by or inspired by women, brought to us by Dom Childs and Simon Callaghan (piano), including Debussy’s Rapsody, a Carmen Suite, and works by Fernande Decruck, Amy Beach, Paule Maurice and … Stephen Sondheim!

The Scott Hamilton Quartet, led by this superb American tenor saxophonist, a Pinner Jazz favourite, will play at the Synagogue on 19th January, 2019 (NB: starting at 8.00pm). His golden tone, strong sense of melody and engaging style are always winning, as are Pinner’s own Dave Green (double-bass), John Pearce (keyboard) and Steve Brown (drums).

On 23rd February, we are really pleased to welcome back to Pinner the Chelys Consort of Viols, performing with local star David Gould (counter-tenor). They present a super programme entitled ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’, in which they perform music – by Dowland, Byrd, Jenkins and Ward - inspired by Renaissance paintings. The blend of the warm tones of the viols with David’s glorious voice will be wonderful.

Our second jazz concert, on 23rd March, is a very special blend of styles and instruments that is highly appropriate to the MPS. David Gordon (roots in Pinner!) brings his superb baroque-inspired jazz trio (including Alec Dankworth, double-bass) to perform with renowned jazz violinist, Christian Garrick. Their previous joint concerts have been inspirational.

Our final event on 27th April is a new piece of Music Theatre: Mary’s Hand, written by Pinner-born composer Martin Bussey & writer/director Di Sherlock, and performed by dramatic mezzo-soprano Clare McCaldin and a trio of instrumentalists. Mary Tudor, first Queen of England, enjoyed games of chance. She invites you to help tell her story – risking head, heart and soul - in a game of cards!

Overall, we have a very special first MPS season ahead. All start at 7.30pm (except January, starting at 8.00pm) with a short interval. Tickets: £16 (advance) or £18 (on the door).
